ipod interface quick question

I have a x990 kenwood. Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod that is the correect interface for it.

ive been looking on ebay and theres the Kenwood KCA-iP500 with out the interface box and theres a Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod with the box and 1 of the cables go to the box and one goes out of the box . do i need the box ?
