ipod controls on kenwood x996

so, wifey threw away manual for my hu. kenwood excelon x996. my question is is there a setting where i can use the ipod controls and song info will come up on hu?

example when songs and info come up on hu(ipod controls dont work) i can only scroll through songs randomly ( dont know what song is next and cant chose a certain song) and ipod says device attached.

when I switch settings so I can use ipod controls, the hu says device attached.

It seems i can only use one or the other for controls.
