iPod and deh-p6500

Im trying to install my iPod in my car, is this possible to do with the pioneer deh-p6500 without buying anything other than a headphone jack to rca convertor? I took of my dash and got to the back of the radio and I found two rca input cords hanging down. I pluged a headphone to rca convertor into my iPod and then pluged rca coards into these inputs. I changed the radio to aux and I got sound. The problem is it is only in my rear speakers. Nothing comes out of my front speakers of sub. Also the volume control doesnt work. It is too cluttered for me to get to the back of the head unit and I cant figure out how to remove it so I can get to the back. All I can get to is these two input cords that hang down.
