Internal Harddrive Networked

Right now i've got a 150gig hard drive in my girlfriends computer in the next room. I've got it networked so that i can access it from mine and put my shit in there too. BUt when her computer is off i cannot get to the files.

Is there any network adapater i can plug the hard drive to so that both computers can access it while the other is off? Will this significantly prolong accessing the files?

In order for the hard drive to work, the IDE controller needs power, which gets its power from the mobo & in turn the PSU. In other words, the computer needs to be on. You could look into booting from LAN if her computer's BIOS supports it. This is IF her hard drive is connected internally to the computer. There may be things out there that'll let you run the drive on its own (own power supply, controller, & data ports - usb/ethernet/serial/parallel) but I've never heard of any.

Theres this internal hard drive case. It supplies power and IDE connection in the case and connectes through a USB cord. If only there was a lan connection on it..

But if you took out her HD and put it in that case her computer wouldnt work at all! Just leave her computer on 24/7...make sure just the monitor is set to turn off after like 10 minutes. Running comps 24/7 is fine and hardly uses any power as long as the monitor shuts down. Or like someone else said see if it supports boot form lan.

She's got 2 hard drives, the 150gig is the slave.

kujo, why not just make that NAS, or buy a nas unit?
