Interchangable Port Box- Round 2

Not going to get around to starting tonight like I had hoped. Battling some allergies atm, and right now, they are kicking my ***... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Great idea. I've never heard or seen such enclosure. I know of some that go from sealed to ported, but not freq adjustments. I'll be checking back to see the progress. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
Interchangeable ports is nothing new, I've been designing and building them for past couple of years.

I had changable tunning on my last system but I did

mine with an add on peice of port

the inner volume of the enclosure was not effected

by the add on peice so changing the tunning had no

effect on the inner cf3

In my current one i have done aero ports to be changed out for spl to daily. I have them the two mounted on a board with weather stripping and some nuts like T nuts that i bolt the board to the box with the ports in it when i want to change freq.

Designing an enclosure with interchangeable is nothing more than a balancing act depending on what the design function is based on what the end results are to achieve given the specifications that are being " held to".

So, the design is going to be held to:

No Change in Net Volume which means that the design has to adhere to the ports displacing the same volume regardless of which port is used and the trade off is the SPL Port will have a larger Surface while the SQ port will have a smaller surface area respective to each ports lengths.

This means the SQ port will have port noise given the same power level that would be applied to the SPL Port.

OR

Based on the design presented, the net volume is not at a constant relative to the ports as designed meaning the bass response as to the acoustical frequency range will vary greatly requiring different systems settings each time the ports are changed unless the user doesn't particularly care about it in the first place.

As we all know, depending on volume, port tune and port area raises or lowers both the F3 of the sub/ enclosure port tuning db point.

Might as well add a flat panel to be able to turn it into a sealed cabinet for shits and giggles. I really like the design though. Cant wait to see pics.

I like the idea of interchangeable ports even though its been around for a while. Seems like a very sturdy design, i would like to try one myself one day. Im building a box for a friend soon but i dont think we have enough space nor wood =(

Goodluck with your build... ill definitely be watching this

Just for the record, Neither Chris or I claim to be the first one to do this. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I just thought it would be a cool build log, so I decided to post it.

pics? that swounds sick

ionsql designed the last box i had for my mt18 with swappable ports.... i didn't even use any weather stripping... just screws and it worked great...
