installing system

Hey Greg, glad to see you were very specific in your question anyways heres what you wanted

Ignore them iddle and just focus onthe top and bottom, You have RCA cables which look like this

rca-cable.jpg

They go from your head unit (CD player) to your amplifier, if your head unit doesnt have anywhere for the RCA cables to go you'll have to use a line output converter

Line_Output_Converter.jpg

Speaker wire goes in one side and RCA's come out of the other and go to your amplifiers inputs for RCA's.

The speaker wire for a line out put converter is going to have to come from one of your speakers, I'd suggest the rear speakers, which will be very easy to reach from the trunk of your car, you'll need to strip some of the jacket off of the wire going into the bottom of your speakers (the ones behind the rear seats).

The jacket would be the red and black stuff that surrounds the copper wire on the inside

After you've stripped off some of the jacket (do not cut the wire, just strip the jacket so that the copper below is exposed) you'll need a little bit of your own speaker wire to send some of the signal to your LOC (line output converter), strip the jacket off of the ends of the speaker wire so it looks like the speaker wire in the picture above, then wrap the copper wire from your speaker wire around the exposed copper in the speaker wire going to one of your rear speakers, if you can sauter, then sauter it, if you can't, wrap it in electrical tape and then use a zip tie to secure it (this is what best buy does... lol), from there run the speaker wire to your LOC, then secure them in the LOC and run the RCA's from the other end to your amplifier.

Now you have an audio signal going to a powerless amp

Next step is you're going to need power, so you will need some big gauge copper wire, depends on your amp, use the biggest you can fit in your amp, so if your amplifier will take 4 gauge put that in, if it takes 1/0 gauge, put that in, I can't tell you waht size to use unless I know what amplifier you have... it should say in the manual, or you can ask the guy you bought from.

The big gauge copper wire which I will call your power wire will go from the positive terminal of your battery to the input for power wire on your amp. You'll have to run it through your firewall (the sheet metal between your engine bay and the interior of your car) usually there are plenty of holes for other electrical equipment to pass through, and you can use those, some searching should help you find a suitable location to run it through. You will need to fuse this power wire pretty near to the battery.

The blue thing sitting on top of his battery next to his wire is the fuse, you just strip the jacket off of the end of the copper wire , insert it into one end of the fuse holder and there is usually a way to secure the wire in the ends of the fuse holder, it should be a little obvious from looking at, if not, take pictures and post them here and we'll help you out, the fuse goes in the middle and is held in by similar means, and then your wire comes out of the other side and makes it way to your amplifier.

Choosing a fase size depends on the size of the wire, because the fuse is there to protect the wire if it ever gets overloaded... 4 gauge is usually good for 100 amps, so a 100 amp fuse is good enough for 4 gauge, 1/0 gauge is usually good for 300 amps, so a 300 amp fuse is good enough for 1/0 gauge... once you figure out how big your power wire needs to be, post here and I'll tell you how big of a fuse and fuse holder to buy.

Another wire, which needs to be the same size as your power wire is going to be your ground wire, it will go into the input on your amplifier for ground, it either needs to have it's end directly bolted to the frame, or ran to the negative terminal of your car battery.

A good way to groudn to your frame is by running a stripepd end of the wire into a ring terminal

Then you can just run the bolt through the ring and secure it with a washer to the hole you drilled into the frame.

The next thing your going to need is remote wire, which usually has a little tiny terminal in-between your power and ground inputs on your amplifier.

You can use a small gauge wire for this 18 gauge or so will work just fine, you need to run it to a 12 volt power source that is on when the car is on, but off when the car is off, if you want to take out your head unit you can tap into the ACC wire which is red, use the same technique as you used for hooking up the LOC to the speaker wire coming into your rear speakers.

You can also run it into unused fuses in your fuse box with a fuse tap

On the left is a fuse tap, and on the right is how it goes into the fuse box.

Get your owners manual out and find out which fuses are unused, and which ones are on only when the car is on or only when the accesory switch in your ignition is on. These are the fuses you want to tap into.

Last but not least your going to have to run speaker wire 10-14 gauge from your amplifiers outputs to your sub(s), it's + to + and - to -

this however can get a lot more complicated depending on your amplifier and subwoofers and resistance and such, post up your subs and amplifier and I can let you know how exactly to hook them up

There are a couple that SMD has tested, around $20.00 that should take the wattage from most any HU. If you are tapping into the speaker wires...
