Installation problem...

I had my setup hooked up for a long time and then it just stopped working. So I tried to reset the amp and it made a popping noise and started smoking. So that amp was toast.

So, I bought a new amp... Took out all the power wire and looked it over. It looked fine, took the ground lead off it looked fine as well. Made sure all the leads were secure and nothing was going to short circut hooked it all up touched the neg lead up to the battery and heard the same popping noise. This time it was just the fuses on the amp that blew so I can replace those. But the inline fuse did not blow. (BTW, it was an 80A fuse... I didn't know that until I opened it up and looked at it so I am going to drop down to a 50A or 40A)

Does anyone understand what is going on? There are no frays in the any of the lines and I can't find anything that would be grounding out.

I was thinking of just getting a new 50A or 40A inline fuse and a new 4AWG power wire. Any suggestions?

Check the rating on the Inline fuse make sure that it is the same as that of your amp. As for whats happening, you have already check the wire so i don't know what else to tell you to look out for.

something sounds crossed, either in the power line from the battery to the amp or in the speaker lines. I would pull it all out and check it twice, maybe even rerun it all.

x2 with john. Also what is the fuse rating on the amp, the 80 maybe to big in the front. I usually do 10 amps or so below my total fuse ratings.

I even took the speaker leads out to see if the amp would just power up and it still popped with no speaker leads attached at all. But, I think that I am going to just gut it it seems the only way. The total fuse rating on the amp is 60A (2 30A fuses).

btw: this is an Audiobahn A8000T Amp and a Audiobahn AW122T Sub

Theres a short somewhere in the system. If you have a volt meter get it start poking aroudn and look for an unusual numbers. Check the ground, power wire, and remote wire for start.

It maybe possible the sunb is wired wrong causing a short that way, but that usually wont pop fuses. Is the amps output rating compatible with what the sub is wired too?

Yes it is matched exactly. 540RMS from the amp and 550RMS for the sub. I attached a volt meter to the ground and the power and I got 12.4V. That's why I can't understand this.

There are only 4 wires going to the amp:

The power

The ground

Remote

High level inputs

I have removed the high level inputs so there is no input going to the amp as far as speaker signal. The power and ground checked out. I have not checked the remote wire but that would be strong enough short out? And with that, this is with the signal off, this happens the second I try to hook the neg batt terminal back up.

No I mean what ohms the sub is wired for compared to the amp load. There is the possibility that the sub could be wired so its shorting out the amp.

One of the hardest problems I had to figure out was a pair of se's were wired for 1 ohm and they showed 1 ohm on the speaker wire, thinking it was wired correctly I over looked it for a while. Happend to be the subs were wired wrong but still showed 1ohm. Infact they were wired in a dead short.

Oh, I see what you mean now. The sub I am using is a 4 ohm SVC sub and the amp is wired for usual 4ohms. So I can't really wire it wrong but I will definatly take a look at it to see if there is something that is not working right.
