So if I am to go with crutchfields deal of "renting" the IMPRINT, once the settings are done, is there a way to disable them, but go back to them if I chose too?

I think you can switch "MultEQ" on and off sort of like on the Pioneers where you can turn Auto EQ on and off. It should store your settings unless you disconnect the battery (not sure if it still stores them then). I just got my 9887 and read somewhere in the manual that the MultEQ is the function that accesses the IMPRINT and Audessey EQ stuff. Could have misread but I'm pretty sure you can do what you're asking.

It's just on crutchfield. It will say $249.99 but if you read the description, it gives you the option to return it within 30 days and they will refund all but a $50 restocking fee:

Yep in the auto the se-r is nothing compared to the 6spd fun factor wise. I LOVE my car, few more mods and I'll be completely happy with it.

You have the MultEQ button on the 9887. I suppose just press it to enable/disable the imprint EQ.

And I think I read somewhere that the MultEQ is stored in a flash memory in the headunit so even if the battery is removed it will still be there. Doesn't make sense to need to do this whole process everytime you disconnect the battery.

yea it'll store it even if the battery is unhooked. It's a must have once you've heard it.

That is so sweet that the unit stores the imprint settings even if the battery is disconnected. Is there anything Alpine didn't think of for this HU?
