All this talk about the alpines needing to be on axis..... you do realize they have a swivel flushmount included in the box correct? I owned a set of the last model type x comp sets as well. While the tweet sounded much better on axis, it was no slouch off axis either, and with the swivel mount it was easy to aim it correctly.
That's a positive for the Alpines.

I hope you expect a better return. Unlike your example, all votes don't carry the same weight. I always marvel at the mentality that rationalizes arguably the most inane and insipid mode of forum behavior. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Perhaps it's worth taking a short trip to make sure that you're happy with your purchase. OTOH, your expectations can probably be conquered with a judicious use of an EQ. You're not asking for much. For all intents and purposes, you may be happy with the IDs and there's a whole slew of folks around ready to tell you that you bought great speaker. Seeing how you're counting votes, mass acceptance and reinforcement must carry a value. Or, you could use your ears, do some legwork, and buy what you like. Good luck.
Yes, I realize that taking votes isn't necessarily the best way to do things. Shops around here seem to include Best Buy, WalMart, and Meijer. There's some smaller shops, but they carry JL, Kicker, and other "high end" name brands. They have Alpine, but they only stock up to the Rs. Any Type X, whether it's a comp or a sub, is hard to come by around here. I'll go around and look, but I'm not going out with a positive outlook on finding shops.

What you say is definitely correct about taking votes. I always recommend to listen to any prospective set of mids before buying them, because there are so many that sound so different. It's not like a sub, where you can see TL results and buy based on that. If you have a chance to hear the id's, alpines, and whatever else you are interested in, it will be worth the drive to do so, or else you are just throwing money away.
There are a couple of ID dealers in Chicago, but for some reason the dealer locator on their website won't load addresses or directions like it will for the other shops in other areas.

I'm not actively looking at the moment, per say. I don't have a job right now and I'm going to school. I just bought new wheel bearings for my 4 wheel drive Jimmy (daily driver). I've got some cash saved up and I don't like what I've got in my car right now because of the midbass situation. I hate going into stores when I know I'm not going to buy anything from them. I worked at Circuit City and I hated it when someone would come in and get all the info from me then go and probably buy the TV on Amazon or somewhere else online. I also worked at a dealership selling cars for a very little while. I hated having my time wasted. I realize I probably should be going out and listening to stuff at stores as I do plan on making a move on a set in the next couple of days before I change my mind about it. I probably will do some looking tomorrow or maybe Tuesday of next week (a day I don't have any classes).

Hertz HSK 165 seems like another good choice. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
Thanks for the further confusion...lol.

Those ask for a little more power than I'll be able to give. My amp is only 70 watts @ 4 ohms, 100 watts @ 2 ohms. I figured the ID CXS52s are perfect for that application, the SPX-17PROs would still be pretty decent, but these ask for a little too much. I'd have to ditch the rear stage and bridge my amp to get the power to them. My amp is rated at 200 watts x2 @ 4 ohms. I'm not sure if I'd want to ditch the rear fill (as crappy and expensive as they are).

I understand what you're saying, I worked retail for 5 years. The way that I get over the guilt/time wasting thing is to tell the guy up front that you just need to audition, not ready to buy, used to work in retail, etc. etc. Tell him to help you if he wants to but not needed, if his time got wasted, it's on him, as he knows the score. I used to get people like that from time to time, and if there was nothing else going on, I would help them out, and if we were busy, I would just let them do what they wanted. It works out well.

I'd say at least try listening with your amp bridged for your comps. I've gotten used to not having rear speakers and I doubt I will ever run them again. Even my crappy PG RSD65CS set came alive when I bridged my MRP-F300. IMO, their output was sufficient for my 95 Camry.

Yeah, but you do sometimes get the pushy sales person who will think you want to buy something if he says the right thing and they'll bug the shit out of you until you leave or buy something. I'll probably go out on the prowl for them tomorrow or Tuesday.

I called a local place that I know carries Alpine. He doesn't have any of the SPX PRO component sets but he "can get them." That was my favorite line of BS I had to feed customers when I sold cars. "Do you guys have a 2009 Altima in dark slate?" "No, but I can get one. Here look at this instead." He told me that Dynaudio is the best speaker on the planet and that he's got a set marked down from $900 to $700 something. They're great speakers, but I don't know if I'd go as far as to say they're the best on the planet.

Best speakers to shops = best margin.

Exactly. Why should he drop the money to stock the Type X comps when he never sells a pair?
I don't think he necessarily needs to stock them, but at least have a working demo of what he's able to get into the store. I don't believe that's too much to ask for. He'll never sell any if he doesn't have a demo. "I see you really like the way these sound. I'll order them for you. It'll be a week and I'll personally give you a call when they get here." That might make me buy from him.

Any other suggestions? The more I think about it, the more I think I'd just be happy with the IDs. But, I look and see the SPX PROs for a few dollars more and think I'd like to go with them. Again, I will go and listen to everything before I go and make a decision, I'm just lost right now. I jumped into the Focals I'm using and wish I didn't. They're great speakers, but not what I want, and I don't want to jump into something else and regret it too.
