Well if it is being finicky, I would suggest backing up all your files the next time they decide to show up...

Not possible unless you've got one hell of a virus. Even if the files were missing they would still be indexed; just not readable. Run check disk. There are tons of programs that can recover lost files and partitions. You say it's a single user account so I don't see permissions being an issue. Computers don't just delete files. It's either user error or a virus.

i was able to recover some of them, but not all. i have no idea what happened. i just backed up all my stuff. 50 dvrs worth. it took a while
