Illumination problems

I wouldn't consider myself a noob, nor would I consider myself an expert. I just replaced my kenwood 889 with the eclipse 8455 into my explorer and now when the headlights are on, the deck flashes between the two illumination settings (very annoying). I am using the same wiring harness that my kenwood used and I never had any problems like this before. I am afraid there is something wrong with the deck. Am I forgetting something? I checked and rechecked the wiring, and the display settings and no luck. Don't know if I should have, but finally I just hooked up the illumination wire to the power wire so when ever the deck is on, it automatically acts as though it is dark out and goes to the dim setting. I would like it to work like its supposed to though.

Any help would be appreciated

You should be able to set it to bright or dim or auto inside the deck.
