A train is coming and a stranger as well as your dog are stuck in the track. You have very little time and can only save one of them in time before the train kills them. The stranger is a 25 year old average looking male, and you have never met him before in your life.
You cannot save both.

As sad as it would make me, I have to save the strangers life. In the grand scheme of life/nature, preservation of our own kind is a higher priority. Unless I kinew this person to be a truly undesirable. I don't mean some cranky grouchy old fart who yells all the time either, I mean serial killer, pedo, etc.

I realize the pet is considered family, but I still couldn't live with choosing a dog, cat, anal gerbil over a human life.

I would save the stranger. My dogs are all smart enough to get out of the way. Hell one of them is afraid of vacuum cleaners, so she'd be long gone, lol.
