Studies have shown that people with no clue tend to vote for the candidate who is listed first. In other words, they vote based on what letter of the alphabet the candidates' last names start with.

Seriously! The reason I question that is that you have this idealized view that you will be familiar with the candiates in each race. Most of the experienced voters that I know readily admit that nearly everytime they have voted that there has been at least one race where they really had no basis for making an informed decision. Due to the nature of some of these races it is almost inevitable.
