I think alt is bad

Yesterday my buddy was driving home and as he was his lights started to slowly dim, and when he would be stopped at a stop light and then go he could floor it and well pretty much still not really move any where. This means his alt is dead right? Im just making sure since I dont have a DMM just yet to check it real quick for him and plus I have never used one for this kind of work yet so i wouldnt know how to test it with a DMM.

With the vehicle running remove the pos. wire from the battery.If the vehicle remains running its the alt.

But from the sounds of it it may be something other then electrical.

Only problem is car wont start without jumping the car then it dies again once we take the jumpers off

Then its probably the battery and not the alt.

But I had the Same problem with my car 2 years ago and I thought it was the battery so i changed it, it helped for a month and then had the same problem a month later and changed the alt and havent had a problem since.

Using a DMM how would isolate the problem between the 2?

It is without a doubt YOUR ALT!!!! your car should run without a battery once its started..

K thats what I thought just wasnt positive didnt want him to go out and buy a new alt and that not be the problem.

go have ur charging system tested at autozone or somwhere else like that
