All right guys, no flames, and I mean it...

I am in a Religion class at the University here and this semester I need to doa field study of a religion other than my own (Judaism)...

I need to visit a place of worship at elast twice, and observe worship services...

Any suggestions on something interesting? (not weird, mass-orgy-cult things, but interesting and recognized)

Thanks guys...

thats my religion too (sort-of). very interesting....

Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (i.e. Mormon)

Buddhism (more denominations than you can imagine but not real popular in the states)

Muslim

Jehovah Witnesses

Those are just a few that are mainstream enough to have members all over but are still a minority in comparison to other religions. I can't think of more than that off the top of my head in the state I am in now:p

well, my class went to a Shaivite temple today (the branch of Hinduism that worships Shiva/Siva as their main deity)... Mormon is out, I want to do something I have had no expereince with ( I know too many mormons, lol) and Islam is not really somewhere I feel super comfortable going in my town... (note, in MY town, lol)

Well, I was gonna suggest Mormon as well.. as most people don't know much about them and have a lot of mis-conceptions..

I myself had to sign away my salvation from the Mormon church as I decided I no longer cared to go (I was baptized at 13 because my mother wanted me to be.. not because I had a testimony).. You could ask your friends about that.. how God wants someone to sign a contract stating they are willing to no longer be saved.. Struck me as odd, and actually was the trigger of my break-up of a 4 1/2 year relationship with my girlfriend (she freaked out at them .. them being 2 elders and a bishop I believe.. we had it out about my dealings and her intruding //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nono.gif.eca61d170185779e0921b0faa9704973.gif )..

I understand that you have a lot of mormon friends, but wouldn't that make it easier as one of your subjects? You said you need two, right?

For another, how about Wicken? or Hedonism?.. I went to an Episcipol (sp) church once.. .... once.. they did the whole hands in the air and speaking in toungues, but not with snakes or anything overly odd //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Good luck with that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

heh, it owuld make it interesting, i know a fair bit about LDS, and it owuld be fairly easy to do for me, but this chick in my class (and I mean that in the hottest way, lol) wants to do her field study with me (same place, cause she doesnt want to go alone) and she turned down that mormon idea real quick, lol

not too shabby..

so far the front runner is one of the branches of hinduism...

anything else guys? possibly something other than a branch or denomination of Christianity?

but kinda tough to get into one when as far as I know, there isnt a practicing group ehre... (as far as I can tell...)

and just think, if she won't go to a mormon church //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif lol

Maybe that's cause she's the type to prefer wiccan //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Yeah, it can be tough to get into a wiccan group for anything.. especially in the south.. Do you have any 'goth' people around? Most times (I'd say 7 - 10) you can find some wiccans.. and most are pretty accomidating if they know you are serious and not just trying to make fun of them.. not sure about "services" though.. mostly they just kind of congragate on occasion and burn inscense and sage.. occasionally they cast spells, but unless you know them pretty well they probably won't let you in on that.. If nothing else, you could get a tarot reading out of it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Originally posted by Wonderbread heh, up here in alberta, teh "wiccans" i avhe met, (had a few friends who pretended, lol seemed to just be there for the image, no real practice a far as i could tell
Wiccan here (majorly practicing one @ that)..bet ya never knew eh?? Lemme research it when i get a few to do jack **** and I'll look for a service near you. check out http://www.wiccan-refuge.com.......site I used to visit but may have become in active for all I know..........Another might be Episcapalian as stated before. Kinda odd but kewl people. How about alcoholics?? Most of them "sacrifice" to the "porcilin god" often enough to fill you in.
