I don't follow why getting a credit card is a bad thing.

Roughly 30% of your credit score is based on a ratio of your debt vs. your credit limit. If you have a credit card with a credit limit of $500 and a debt of $10, that is a very positive impact to your credit score. You can even overuse it as long as you have at least 50% of your credit limit paid off prior to every reporting (ie. prior to when your next invoice comes out).

I never said getting a store credit card was a bad thing. But, the fact that he went through the whole process of applying for the card and signing on the dotted line after the X, even though he didn't want the card is what kills me. After he was approved, he immediately wanted them to close the account. He thought it was one of those store discount cards, like they have at grocery stores. But, the whole process was so obviously "THIS IS A CREDIT CARD!!!" How he didn't get the vibes, I don't know. If I were him, the first time they asked for my ID or something, I'da said, "Sorry, but this isn't what I want, I'll pay the two dollars."

just the fact that he wasted 30 minutes of my time to save two dollars, because he had no idea what the hell he was doing.
theres nothing wrong with saving money... heck even I've done the whole store credit card thing. But, it was to purchase a $1200 lawn mower at Home Depot. I saved $180. My roomate saved.... $2.

I actually did laugh in the middle of class when I read that.
