Hes got money set aside for wires and box materials, so no need to figure those in. I was thinking...
1 JL 10w3v2 - dual 4 ohm wired to 2 ohms

1 Hifonics ZX6400 - 85w to each speaker @ 4 ohms, 340w to the sub @ 2 ohms bridged

1 set of coaxials - not sure on those yet

Is this setup good, bad, or just down right ugly?

BTW, the really wants JL (stupid high school kids)

Well, i talked to my friend again and told him that when he buys JL, hes buying the name and that there are better to equal subs out there for a cheaper price. I told him that he could probably buy 2 10's for the price of a 10w3v2. I got to thinking, would 2 10" Alpine Type S's compare with one 10w3v2 in SQ and SPL?

Without getting into a debate over what subs/products are best, when saying that with JL he is buying the name, you do realize that name is well earned, and he would also be buying rock solid performance.

Names/great reputations are earned over time, be it JL, Alpine, Rockford, Eclipse, etc.

I think it would be obvious to anyone that 2 10s should have more spl than 1 10. As to what sounds better, I think the W3 series is an excellent line. I owned a 12W3 once. The only Alpine subs I have heard were ported(not a fan of ported) systems that were playing rap garbage....kind of hard to get a handle on how much sq they were capable of having.

I prefer to buy ONE better sub as opposed to TWO lesser subs. Many don't view that opinion, but some do.

With your above-mentioned layouts I think I'd go with the single W3 over two Type Ss, myself. If you're wanting to get nothing but BNIB gear then $400 is kinda limiting. System #2 would probably sound pretty decent, actually. Though with a bit of research I think you could do better than those Infinities for $70.

If you're willing to buy used then your options open considerably wider. With some carefully placed bids on eBay quality used gear can be had for pennies on the dollar as compared to its actual worth. (example - the DAT Hex-series components Worlddre was talking about above that he scored for $120. New those ran around $500. Not a bad deal, eh?) Some really good deals on some nice stuff floats through the classifieds here pretty frequently.

Yea i told my friend that buying used or refurbished would help him get better stuff for the price he has. But he said he wanted new stuff, so... not much i can do there, his money. He really wants two subs, so i think hes leaning toward the Type S's. Any other opinions on which system might sound better? Both are going to be in sealed boxes to their recomended specs and both are going to be getting close to their recomended power.
