I Can't Find An Rta To Use!!!

****, im so mad!!! i tried calling around to some major local car audio shops and they were of no help. most of them didn't even know what the hell an RTA was and one guy from AL & ED's had the nerve to tell me "even if we did have an RTA we wouldn't lend out a 1500 dollar piece of equipment and i'm sure no one else would either." what an *******!!! anyone know where i can go in SAN DIEGO to get my car RTA'd?? i'm willing to pay money of course. if i actually can't find a single person in this city to let me use their RTA i guess i'm going to have to go the software route.. and if that happens to be the case, what would i need to turn my desktop computer into an accurate enough RTA??

most shops you get rta'd there with a shop guy running it. i spent a crap load of $$$ with one shop and learned to use it tuning my car and theirs. i can use it but i cant take it with me. i am able to use it for free but i still give them 10-20 bucks each time i use it. wouldnt be cool not to. most places shouldnt charge more than 50 an hour but at the sametime you have to build rapure with them. shops are there to make money and they are a bizz (this isnt directed towards you persay) the people running the rta and the machine cost money. its not too hard to get a "good" rta thats within a db or so of what you need. the mic is probably the most important as most lap tops of 8 years ago didnt have "great sound cards" and they ran linear x on those

well im not going to be using my laptop if anything. im going to use my desktop computer. gonna bring it to the garage and use it as an RTA. it has a sound blaster LIVE! sound card in it.. is this good enough to do some RTA'ing? if not, i can borrow my buddy's sound blaster audigy.. is that good enough? if those sound cards are, then all i would need is a mic right?

You could do it the poor mans way.

go to radio shack and pick up a cheap spl meter, play different tones at the same volume (50,100,150,300,1000,2500,3500, and so on) and write down the levels that the spl measures.

Its ghetto but it will get you in the ballpark.

here's what i plan to get when i have the funds. it pwns an RTA, does a lot more and it works with a laptop (i.e. portable //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif) or desktop.
