Really nothing wrong with good plywood if you build it right. You need void free ply (which is hard to get) and you need to brace any large pieces to keep it from flexing. It will weigh less than MDF and be stronger, but will cost more.

Thats alot 5/8 is 17 here, and 3/4 is 22 here
