I'm @ UNC Charlotte & I hate it. I graduated hs in '07, took a year off & worked full time, then went to the local community college. I just took the basic 44hr core classes to transfer as a rising junior, working full-time this took 2 yrs. I transferred to UNCC with a 3.9 GPA. I'm finishing up my first semester here & I absolutely hate it. The college & atmosphere are great, as well as Charlotte, but I'm just not interested in what I'm studying.....My current major is Electronic Engineering. As of right now I have 2 A'a & 3 B's this semester, so the workload isn't hard, I just don't like it.
When I started at the community college I wanted to get a 4 year degree in engineering & work somewhere near Charlotte in the automotive field. Now I'm having 2nd thoughts, the deeper I get into it the more I dislike it. I've been seriously contemplating going back home after this semester & reattending the community college.
I'm thinking of going to the community college & getting a degree in radiography. Associate in Applied Science. Graduates of the program are eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists’ national examination for certification and registration as medical radiographers.
It's a 5 semester program, but I've talked to the director & I could complete it in 3 semesters. He said average starting salaries for people in the program is around 36-40k. My girlfriends older sister got the same degree 5 yrs ago & started @ 32k back home. She got a job @ Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte last year & she's now making close to 50k a year.
I know this is probably gonna be less money than an engineering degree long term, but money isn't everything. It seems I could make a decent living & I'd be much happier.
Plus, professors @ UNCC are telling me engineering takes experience & it'll probably take me awhile to advance in the field to a really good job. You have to work your way up. I just don't feel like spending 2 more years in college to get a degree in something that I'm not gonna enjoy.
I can finish the radiography program in 18 months & go right to work making decent money.
Thoughts?
