HUs that can disable internal amp

I have an 8053 as well. It's the only Head unit I've ever owned though and couldn't tell ya what the difference is.
IMO the 8053 is the best head unit Eclipse ever made. Also the last dead head they made for here in the states too.

 
The amp mute will change the distortion curve and subsequently maybe your gain setting, but it's not worth much for sound quality... mostly, it's more efficient for the deck and allows it to run cooler.. and is a selling feature. There are more important deck features.

 
The Alpine 7995 was the best HU I have ever owned. It was a "dead-head" and was like night

and day when I replaced it from the Eclipse I had and was running 2 amps. Everything sounds so much more

clean and brighter. I think it's especially noticeable in the highs and mids over the sub.
