How'd they do it?!

Hi all.

I own a Mmats 15" Pro subwoofer. It's got some serious bass when it works correctly but I've had lots of problems with it over the years.

I sent it back a couple years ago because, apparently, it was blown voice coil.

The trick is; How the hell did they repair the voice coil without cutting the surround or spider of the speaker?! I got it back with original surround and what appeared to be original spider as well!

I'm curious because now the voice coil is broken (not blown) and I'd like to try and fix it myself without cutting it all to shreds. Nor do I want to pay another 85 dollars to get this pos fixed.

Does anyone know how to get the cone off the frame without cutting the surround or spider. Maybe some type of solution that softens the glue or something?

Thank you for any help!

its a complete PITA to get the moving assembly off the basket, and have it usuable for the 2nd round..

and its nearly impossible to get the former away from the triple joint... and insert another former

my guess.... they didn't fix jack ish..

Hi thanks for your reply bassman.

Well they did something, because when I got it back it sounded much better (for awhile, until I broke the voice coil somehow).

If I play it at low volume it sounds like its blown. But if I turn it up loud it sounds fine. Its like the voice coil hits the side of the magnet at low volume or something.

If I press on the bottom of the cone I can hear the voice coil rub the magnet on the inside. And it goes "clank clank" if I tap on it hard. lol

BTW the amp for this sub is mmats D100HC 1700W @ .67 ohm. Although the sub is hooked up at 2ohm so it isn't getting all that power.

i had a sony pos sub like that. at low volumes all i could hear was scrapping, but when cranked no noise. maybe it has something to do with the layers of voice coils?idk.

Yeah, just wondering if I can fix the voice coil somehow. Before it breaks off or burns up completely. The sub still hits like a champ for being broken, but I don't know how long this will last..

Overall, I payed more than 350 dollars on the speaker itself (no enclosure) including the previous repair costs. I'm not planning on paying for it again if you know what I mean.

Theres nothing wrong with the cone or the surround. That is like brand new still. Plus I'm definitely not going to spend any more money on this pos just to have it blow up or break again. I'd rather chop it up myself, for free.

I just need some recommendations on how to do it properly, if possible.

no way would you be able to remove the spider without damaging it...

rubber surrounds however can be done.

I'd just keep using the sub as is, untill it fails.

or, you COULD cut the dustcap off, and force something in down between the voice coil, and pole piece to bend the coil former so it doesn't scrape (then remove whatever it was ya shoved down there :p)

Why do you think they reused the original soft parts.
Because there's a very small hole in the surround where I poked it with a screwdriver long before I sent it in for repair. They apparently saw that and put small layer of silicon on the back to seal it. But I can still see the hole if I look close enough.

The sub didn't really used to scrub that much because it has a really stiff cone. And it didn't used to go "clank clank" like that either. That clank clank sound is the broken voice coil (I think) hitting on the inside of the speaker.

Is that possible for the voice coil to bend just by sheer electrical current? My luck, if I shoved something in there I'd probably break it off completely.

You're saying there is no way to remove this spider without damaging it? It's just glued on. Maybe they used something to soften the glue to remove it?
