A good rule of thumb, if your port length is less than 12" at 30hz or so then the area is probably too small to be much gain over sealed, all of my boxes I tune it and try to get the port around 20-25" long and my favorite number is 32hz, and they all just plain beat. When we used to build boxes for pure SPL we always tried to get the ports as long as we could and physically fit. You can always make the port in an 'S' pattern if its too long to fit between walls.
I use ISD, seems to be fairly accurate, back in the day we had the Termlab software that was like $1200 at the time, and the free ISD was pretty much spot on by comparison to it.
