how to tell if a HU powers on?

my GF bought a 94 civic and there was a JVC HU in the trunk. It looks great. no scratches or anything. So i installed it and im positive i did it right, but it doesnt power on or light up or anything. Can i just hook the power or display wire a power wire or anything? thanks in advance.

red/yellow to batt + big black wire to -. if it doesnt come on, try pushing the power button. check fuses. otherwise it's toast
