How to record sound from computer

I want to record the sound off something from Youtube. In the past, I've just run a cable from my mic jack to my headphone jack, but that's just ghetto.

What is a program that records whatever sound is happening on your desktop?

I know sound recorder comes with windows, but it records what comes in the mic jack.

try audacity? dunno if it works or not

Audacity works well. Just hit record., Then save as mp3. You will need a one time dl of lame encoder to do that. pretty easy.

I'm sure there's a bunch of other ones out there too.

There's a bunch of tutorials on YT about how to record with Audacity as well.
