How to properly...

Thats what she said
I've got a '98 grand am, and the stock door speakers were stock 4x6's with a 7" plastic grill on the panel. The way it sits right now, I have a carpeted wood ring secured to the panel, and have my speaker secured into the ring (mind you, these are 5.25" alpines). I had some sony 6.5" speakers before, that with the grill on the top, barely covered up the hole in the pannel, and if you looked from below there was a gap that you could see behind.

Where I have the speakers mounted, in the panel, is about a good 2-3" out from the actual sheet metal of the door. I realize I shouldn't have mounted them in the panel, but I didn't know any other way at the time. Plus, they're low powered for now, until I get some RSD's or something, so there's no rattles.

So would the properly way of doing this be to build up enough layers of wood on the actual sheet metal so it's flush with the door panel? Then place the speaker in, and put the screws through the speaker-door panel-wood? I have no problem with that (if thats the correct way), but unless I get 7" speakers, I"m going to have a gap around the speaker that the grill wont cover? Unless I fiberglass the hole smaller, how should I, or how do you guys, go about doing this?

Speaking of which, are there any 7" subs/midrange/midwoofers out there for sale (for a decent price)? That would be ideal if they didn't actually need an enclosure

Thanks for the suggestion.

Could you possibly get me a link for them?

And any links with tutorials on how to mod your doors like I want, feel free to post.
