How to get rid of your over-priced land phone service (with working DirecTV TiVo)

no no, ADSL is 1 pair only. It is a digital signal that is over your reg pots line. if you have 2 pairs then you have 2 pots lines with one of them having DSL.
Most companies wont do a regular DSL line without Pots service already.
If they used a whole house filter at the drop maybe he is thinking the filtered line is POTS and the unfiltered is DSL. Or maybe he has sDSL?

I'm definitely not a residential phone service specialist, so you know more than I do on how that works, exactly. All I know is, one pair is DSL and the other pair was local land analog voice. I am running old aDSL. I wish my area had the ability to do better, but the best I can do is 1.5Mb down/768 up.

Yea, they are separate at my place.
no phone company in their right mind would waste another full pair for DSL only. That was the whole point of DSL was to strap a digital signal on top of a pots analog line to get both reg pots serv and highspeed internet all in one. There are other types of DSl that have nothing to do with internet and the point of it was also to keep from having to use more then one pair wear 2 or more pairs were needed before.

I think I see what you're saying now. So, DSL can "ride" on an analog voice line? That's new to me.

I have DSL service from originally half a decade ago. At that time, it didn't appear there were any options BUT to use the 2nd pair for dedicated DSL. In fact, I asked and they said if I wanted to have 2 separate phone lines in the house, I'd have to get the phone company to run another line into the house because the current one would be using up 1 of the 2 [pair] and the DSL would use up the other.

Dude, DSL has been around for way longer then half a decade and its always been on the same pair from the CO as the pots. DSL is not a dedicated pair. I work on that shit every day as an I&R tech (I work on the actual pairs from the CO to your house) for the largest TelCo in the US.

I dont work in the feidl..i just find it interesting and used to hang around the CO by my house...but i thought sDSL was dedicated pair?

I'm absolutely not arguing with you... and I know quite well that DSL has been around for longer than that -- it's just how long I've had this existing installation.

I don't work on this shit every day, so I'm not as familiar with it as you are. All I know is when I go to the phone box and disconnect 1 pair, I lose JUST DSL (voice works), and when I disconnect the other pair, I lose JUST phone (DSL works). From that, I gather, my services were riding on dedicated separate pairs. Would you agree?

I guess it really doesn't matter all that much. People are going to VoIP all the time and dropping, completely, their old fashioned land phone service. They get DSL broadband after killing their phone service still, and that's what matters.

The tricky part is getting these devices expecting an analog line to "connect" with a modem on the end of the call through a VoIP digital service. For some reason, an external standard modem does the trick in this case.

But, I am very interested in what you're saying and wouldn't mind knowing more if you have the time...

sDSL has the same up and down speed which you already stated yours as being 1.5/768. SDSL is dedicated But ADSL is not.

ETA: thought I quoted HiAmp. but you guys get the picture

I'm not familiar with the DirecTV Plus unit but my $1000 HD TiVo in one room and Hughes DTV TiVo in the other, plus DTV HD receiver currently on the PC, will have to do for now. Is the DTV+ DVR out now and is there an HD version of it?
hate to tellyou this but your hd/dvr is now only 549 after 100.00 rebate.....but the directv plus dvr is the newest one released about 2 weeks ago. Its model number is Directv R15. Currently available at bestbuy. there is no hd version of it available yet. Should be march or april when it is available, it will also be mpeg4 compatible.

if u need any info or help w/ any of the directv stuff let me know....im in advanced tech support.
