How to detect distortion on sub?

Having trouble hearing if there is distortion in my new sub setup. 12" reconed mag in 2.0cu ft @ 34hz on a treo 750.1 in a trunk car.

With the volume lower it sounds really good. When i turn it up to the volume to where I set the amp for at 1200watts with a dmm, on some songs it's a little boomy and hard to tell if there's distortion because it's really loud and there are so many rattles in my car lol.

Any suggestions or methods you guys use to check for distortion?

Don't really have the time or money to buy and figure out an oscilloscope. Anyone near CT or NY have a scope?

turn it down and deaden the car
Yeah, I've been keeping it down mostly. It's nice to have it up on the occasional ridiculous bass rap track though. Want to make sure I'm not clipping the amp or pushing the sub too much.

The treo 750.1 is supposed to be able to put out 1500 clean, and woofercooker reconed the sub so I can run a max of 1500rms on it.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid.
