how much power for a type-x

so i've been doing a little bit of research lately into redoing the speakers and adding a subwoofer to the tC. I'm going mainly for SQ in this setup. Loud is nice, but I do have ears and I want to be able to hear when i'm older //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif During my researching I came across the Alpine Type-X subwoofer. I want a 10" version. What kind of amplifier is something like this going to need to sound decent? I've read that the sub is a bit on the power hungry side, but i've accepted that. I've got around $2,000 (give or take a few hundred) to put down on an entire system including-

Head Unit

front components

rear coaxials

interior speaker amplifier

1 10" subwoofer

subwoofer amplifer

box that mounts on the side of the hatch (i want to retain some space back there).

i didnt have good luck with my type x, but dont let that turn you off, it supposed to be quite a sub

GIve it at least a 1000rms

mabye a dei/viper for the sub amp or hifonics, i think hifonics is the most reliable amp i have ever owned, and i have had PPI, KICKER, orion, planet audio, avionixx, visonik, legacy, sony,

I have had a hifonics zx6400 four channel amp for years now, and it has outlasted almost everything else i have had. right now im using half of it to power a cheap kicker comp 12" and the other half for my comps, its prolly the best amp i have owned, and it looks cool too.

If your looking for SQ the type X is a very good choice. I had 2 12's (type X's) in a vented enclosure built to specs. At first I had a MTX 1501d pushing them and the SQ was great, loudness not too bad. So I went out and purchased a Planet Audio 2200d for more power (them subs are power hungry). The X's still sounded great of course but I just could'nt get them to give me that hard hit that I enjoy so much.

But since you said you want to preserve you hearing for future use I would have to say go with the type X. Amazing SQ. I say 9.5/10 on SQ and 7.5/10 on SPL.

the box that I'm currently looking at is a .6 cubic foot sealed box. As I said, im new to this. Is sealed the best choice for sound quality?

Well everybody has there own preference on what sounds better for SQ.SPL and SQL. But my opinion would be go ported. The type X can hit them lows like theres no tomorrow, definately go ported.

so im sitting here looking for an amplifier this evening... I read on alpine's website that the type-x is a 4 ohm subwoofer. You guys are saying that more power is always better with this subwoofer. So in looking for a high powered amplifer that can supply 1000+ watts rms @ 4 ohms, ive only come across a few. one is a HIFONICS ZXi1006 and another is the Orion 2500D. the first is a 2 channel that can run @ 1x1000w rms @ 4 ohm and the second is 1x1200w rms @ 4 ohm. I'm leaning towards the orion. I know its like 700 dollars but i'd rather do something right the first time than have it not be satisfactory and me have to go change it out later. I've been noticing that it is really hard to find a high RMS wattage when running @ 4 ohms. is there a way to wire a single sub so that it runs at say... 2 ohms?

if it is a dual 4 ohm woofer yes, you can wire it in parallel to give you a 2 ohm load. Parallel would be all positives together, and all negatives together.

alrighty, time for the newbieness to show..

the type x is a 4 ohm by 4 ohm dual voice coil sub. dual voice coil... this means that there are 2 positive leads and 2 negative leads on the sub itself right? I would have to run a wire connecting the positive leads together and a wire connecting the negative leads together and then splice the positive and negative wires comming from the amplifier into the wires that i just used to connect the + and - leads on the sub together?

it should be a little easier to get your ~1000RMS at 2 ohms instead of 4....

hehe by far yes! I just did a little more snooping around and by brandontw's recommendation, I looked at some hifonics amplifiers. The BX1500D seems to fit the bill quite nicely. It's a 1 channel, 1000w RMS @ 2 ohms amplifier. 1000 is exactly the wattage recommended by alpine and by what you guys are saying. Now my question is, to those that have used this amplifier, how was the reliablity? Is there anything else out there that for around the same money would give better wattage and/or reliability?

most hifonics amps are a little overrated so try the 1605 or 1805 just to make sure your getting all the 1000 watts you'll need.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You are going to want to send that sub around 1000-1300 watts rms. Be careful with enclosures, I had it in a shitty prefab ported and it sounded like ***. Sub is more geared toward sealed boxes, but a well designed slot port box will work. If using sealed, you will want closer to 1300 watts to really make it hit.

bleh... lets just throw more money at an amplifer then! What (reasonably priced) amplifer out there can dish out a true (not overrated) 1000-1300w RMS @ 2 ohms?
