i've spent maybe 60 bucks on wiring, not including the $40 I spent on an 8 guage install kit when I was a n00b.

mynext project plans are

75 ft of 0 guage wire (2 runs to the back(50 ft) and big 3(i may double them)(25)

50 ft of 4 guage (5 feet each - adn 5 each + on the amp (2 orion 2500d's(dual Power supplies and a 300.2)

120 feet of 8 guage (2 dual 2 xxx's (each - and positive get 15 ft each)

4 distrobution blocks (2 for the positive and 2 for the negative)

2 0 guage fuse holders

2 sets of quality rca's

16 8 guage ring terminals(bolts that go thru the box to make wiring easy)

10 0 guage ring terminals ( for the big 3 ands such)

and there are proboly some things i am missing

Stinger took pretty good care of me, so Very minimal. All expert. I just have to stop telling them "Its for my personal car". Theyre starting to not believe me....

This is sort of the sub/install question. You don't ridiculously expensive wire to go anywhere as long as you put it where there is minimal RF/EMI interference. Obviously for the power wires you need to drop some ching as thick wire ain't cheap. $400 seems way too much, I might re-evaluate what I was looking at for wire. Radio Shack can really be your friend here....
