Go in and find a car you want, before you go for your second test drive find a local independent shop to check it for you or ask family where they go.
They don't do much and the few times I have done it I have always paid something usually $20-50 some say don't worry about it (Thinking you are local and will be back for other repairs) but you can just throw them a $20 if they do a decent job.
Once you buy a few cars you will get used to looking for the little things you need to.
