How much can a 60-70amp alternator handle?

Will be ordering my system in a week or two, not sure what the stock alternator is this is going in but i'd say 60-70 amps, how much RMS can that handle without having to upgrade to new alt or extra battery. Subs will equal 1200RMS but everyone say they were underrated so i should give them like 800-1000 RMS each... will I nedd to upgrade? Thanks

If you are going to be using class D amps you might get away w/ 1000 watts total. Make sure to do the "Big 3" upgrade though. That will help quite a bit w/ voltage drops. Also, stay away from capacitors!!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

i could get about 750 watts (rated power) all class AB out of a 70 amp alt in my truck without much if any dimming. that is about 500 going to a sub and 125x2 going to components. all i have is a kinetik hc1400 battery under the hood and the Big 3 done. When you are building a system and you dont want to dump alot into the electrical don't buy things based on HOW MUCH POWER they put out because the more power your amps and speakers are the more power they require. with what you have 500-600 watts Class D to the subs and 200 or so watts for mids and highs would be about as crazy as you would want to take it. then select your subs based on the power you have available. I would still do the big 3 and get an agm battery under the hood. If you were going to run mids and highs off of your deck you might be able to run more to the subs. if you go crazy on the amp power you may wind up with damaged amplifiers or need to get a bigger or new alt after the stocker fails depending on how you use your system.

So what would i need to handle 1600-2000RMS? a new alternator? will I need a extra battery also? How many amp alternator would i need, and if a extra batery is need how big of one?

Take this into play:

Current = POWER (watts) ÷ Voltage

So, as a "guess"

2000 ÷ 14.4v = 139 amps of current draw

Or at a lower voltage

2000 ÷ 12.2v = 164 amps of current draw

Also you have to figure in what your car/truck draws to while running.

Hope this helps!

just curious on a stock 135amp alt and no big 3 done and a 1000amp batt under the hood how many watts can i run
Look at my post above, mess around with some numbers, see what you come up with. Also as I stated, you have to take in to play what your car/truck/whatever is going to draw under typical conditions.

remember to take into account that your alternator will not put out this much power at idle!!

does that change in regards to what battery you use? If not whats the point of upgrading to kinetiks if your amp is still gonna try the same amps
