technically speaking in physics, 3db louder is doubled, thats why u need double the power or an extra speaker to be 3 db louder. so 20 db is like 7 times louder

I had 4 15 inch orion ntenses and 1200 watts of autotek mean machine in full size blazer:crazy like 5 yrs ago that hit 152 and Im deaf now:crazy:

to gain 3db you theoretically double cone area or double power - its never that easy

Sit in a car that does a 143.... come back in 20 minutes... turn it up 3db... you won't notice a big difference.

It would seem as though people would get louder and louder...technological innovations, participation, low interest rates (past year or so, anyway). It would seem as it would trend upwards...for a while anyways. Once people hit a dB that cause damage to vehicles, etc. then it may become pointless, but it would seem it would be cheaper to hit 150 db today than 5 years ago.

Its not cheaper to get to a 150 anymore - you could just as well do it with equipment from 10 years ago that wasn't "expensive"... and you could just as well NOT go it with equipment that IS expensive now.

The difference is advancement in enclosure design and overall install... 10 years ago all you saw was however many sealed woofs you could stuff in... now people spank all those setups with 2 10's.

One difference now is definitely that power is much much cheaper! The truth, however, is that power isn't even really that important... you can get a box to be nasty nasty effeciant, a 150 with as little as 500 watts is very feasable.

it's harder today to get a 150 because the mics used are much more accurate, and alot harder to cheat.

the 150 of ten years ago might not grab a 150 today, and i'd wager it would barely break a 140.

Spkrman, mathematiclly (spl?) speaking, 3db is indeed twice as loud(twice the intensity), though the human ear perceives 10db to be twice as loud. squeak post the formula a bit earlier in this thread....
