How loud is LOUD?

Loud is when you sit in your buddy's truck, chillin, beatin like hell(holding your ears), you look down and notice that your bloody nose has dripped blood all over your shirt

That's when you're gettin a wee bit loud

Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the replies. Now I can kinda get an idea as to what I may be hitting. I have 2 15" L7's and a planet audio 2250D. With all your descriptions, I'd say i'm at about 140-145. For some reason though, with this setup, I know I should be louder. It's all in a 1996 GMC Jimmy.

Is it really true that i'm starving my amp with 4 gauge wire? With a 2000+ watt amp, people said my wire was restricting it to 1400 watts. Any thoughts on that?

upgrading your wires would help a little. Not sure if it would be enough to notice any sound difference but it's also easier on your electrical system... so it's probabaly just a smart move to make if you got the money.

and if you're hitting 140-145db, be happy with that man. Honestly, you don't want much louder. Just my opinion but 140 is where I plan on stopping if I ever get my car that loud.

I had a whiteout from a JBL HT center-channel tweet.

It cracked right in my ear; I couldn't see, and yanno how when you yawn, you get that like, .. pressure in your head? I hit the floor. That isht hurts to think about.

wow i would like to have my current setup metered just to know, im about to get a 15" Brahma pushed with a Diesel Audio NSH-2000d wich should be about 1000w @2ohm, im gonna go with a large ported box at about 37hz in a rsd box in a 98 mustang with lots of edead, what do you guys think i can hit??? i have no idea ive never had one metered.

theres a difference of 20 dBs from a 22 to a 12 guage? how is that possible? 12 guage seems louder but not over twice as loud..
actually you had it right the first time. It is only 20db louder, to be twice as loud it would have to be 240db, so you were 100db off. But no matter, it is a high freq db, rather than a low frequency db. High freq can burst your eardrums, low can burst your lungs. BIG difference.

lesson to be learned here...in either case, wear your headphones and if possible, a bullet proof vest. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

3db increase is technically twice the acoustical power (twice as "loud"). However, human's have very inaccurate/insensitive hearing, and perceive "twice as loud" to occur at around a 10db increase.

So;

3db increase = twice the acoustical power (technical doubling of sound)

10db increase = perceived as twice as loud by human's

It has nothing to do with needing to double the actual decibels (120 * 2) to be twice as loud.

Somewhere within the audible range of sound.

Did you try the red on both sides, then the white on both sides. It may be a bad cable.
