How important is SQ if all you listen to is Rap?

I hear people saying 'shitty SQ' this, and 'shitty SQ' that, but what songs are they testing it with? IMO, the SQ of a sub would be a huge factor for people who listen to music where the bass is an actual instrument that you can hear and recognize, like county, rock, etc.

But what about rap? Would most subs generally sound the same, or in the same area, as far as SQ goes?

"SQ" is a subjective term. Some people tak it literally, scientifically... how well the speaker accurately reproduces the original recording. Other people talk about "SQ" in terms of their personal preferences, how they think the music *should* sound. Either way, you'll find different subs meet that (your) priority differently.

SQ has so many parts to it, like clear tone quality and a flat frequency response

IMO, in rap, you really only need the clear tonal quality

i dont see too many people going around listening to rap on a system with level matched mids/highs and lows

In rap you still need accuracy aswell. Ever listen to a rap song on a stereo with poor sound quality? All the bass beats just blur together, creating just a giant string of vibration but no real sense of actual "sound". Listen to it on a system with good sound quality, and you'll probably hear bass beats that you'd never hear on the poor SQ system. The good sound quality system will have great definition of where one beat ends and the next begins, etc etc.

Yes, SQ does matter when listening to rap. Not for everysong or everyperson, but when I was listening to dark lotus with my friend all the bass beats were blurred together and it annoyed the zhit out of me.

Some rap songs have tight bass that requires a properly tuned box, but most of it is just boomy crap. Now, a good system will stay true to the music and deliver boomy sound when it is suposted played, A shitty system just creates noise and vibration. Although, the difference between rap on a bood and bad system is much less that another genre like rock or classical.

SQ is one of the reasons why I have my SEs in a sealed box. I honestly havent had a ported box yet. but the tight bass and ability to distinguish the different bass beats is valuable to me.

Jmac, good to see you're still around sometimes. =)

Like Jmac said, accuracy in a sub is always important. The only exception is in competition where all a sub will ever see is a sine wave.

However, it's also very important what type of music you listen to. With rap, it's not as important as other types. In fact, I've heard rap songs where to the bass line was actually made to sound like clipping, and had longer than expected delays between bass hits. I can only guess why. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif
