how good are these XM radio antennas

As for the antennas...any antenna that you don't properly mount on a good ground plane, up as high as possible, is going to be a compromise in performance. Whether or not that's significant enough in your install to make a difference is something you'd have to find out.

i've put plenty of them on the front dash and they all work great

they work just as well as the others... it's magnetic... just put it on top of the roof... run the wire around your windshield and under the weatherstripping into the car

Well, it is designed for use on your roof, but I've seen people mount them on little suction-cup mounts on the bottom of their windshield to put it within line of sight of the sky...

At the frequencies that XM uses, getting a good ground plane isn't too important, but it could help in fringe coverage of a satellite.

A reason I don't like mag mount antennas.

I've done a few on the top dash and had no problems...I always try to mount them either on the front of the roof, or the rear right above the windshield...
