How do newsgroups work?

I've seen a few, and I've been looking at GigaNews because I saw someone post about it before, but I don't really know how it works. Like, I just pay $20 and then download whatever I want? What if I wanted something kind of obscure, like say, all the ducktales episodes. Would I be able to find something like that? Or do I just ask for whatever file I want and someone uploads it for me?

Just want a little info before dropping any cash into this //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You get a client to access the newsgroups, I use newsleecher.

You can either download available headers or you can use a search engine that generates results and provides you with a .nzb file. Try looking at http://binsearch.info/ and http://alt.binaries.nl/

As for the provider, check with your ISP, as some do provide good newservers, mine has theirs through giganews at no additional cost to the end user. Look around, I tried http://yottanews.com, they're fairly cheap and have decent retention and speeds. Besides that, any other questions?

Well, my real question is what all can you download? Do you get movies and stuff from them (like other p2p such as bittorrent, limewire, etc) or is it like a forum thingy? It is for getting movies and music and stuff isn't it?

newsgroups is very very good for movies. also, i know you weren't being serious, but ducktales vol 2. is also on newsgroups //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

theres a ton of stuff you can download. apps, music, movies, books, xxx //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Actually, I was being quite serious about ducktales. Is it really better than torrents as far as content goes? I don't really care about the speed, because I only have 1.5mbps (tried upgrading to 6mbps today, but bellsouth said it isn't available here grr). I've always heard people talk about it, but I've never used it because of $$$, unless there is a free version?

to answer your question, i've used newsgroups and regular torrents and the only difference for me was speed. i can pretty much find anything i was looking for on newsbin on regular torrent sites with about 40 min more dl time.

also it just has categories (music, movies, games, etc.) and you just search for what you want. it's not the forum type request thing you're talking about.

and if i recall correctly the newsgroup i used didn't really 'hold' onto old movies for more than 30 or so days.

Yeah, newsgroups are like message boards, thousands of messageboards. Some of those messageboards are for posting binary files. Lots of music, movies, apps in there but the average time before the "message" expires is about 30 days. If you want something, request it. Most of the time you won't get it but you can try.

What I will say for them is they tend to have more consistent quality rips for music.

Basically though, the web is causing the slow death of ngs for messaging but because of the possibility of being totally anonymous, they will survive awhile longer for piracy and **** of all types.

I can't imagine needing them if you are comfortable with torrents and use them a lot.
