How can you tell if an amp is bad or messed up?

I've been running my Kicker ZX 750.1 with 2 CVR dual 4 ohm subs for about a month and now the subs are messed up. I think the voice coil is blown cause it smells funny after slapping for a couple minutes. I lowered the gain so that it doesn't smell anymore but now the subs don't sound very clear. I know that I am supposed to run dual 2 ohm subs with my amp. I know my subs are messed up, but how can I tell if my amp is messed up or bad? If I keep using these subs with my amp with the gain at a lower level, can my amp get damaged? Thanks..

youre amp is not to be wired past 2ohms. people say it will be okay but no it wont be okay. some of them run fine at 1ohm others do not
My amp is running at a 4 ohm load. How can I tell if the amp is messed up? I know my subs are kinda blown?

where is the gain set now and the bass boost? they probably arent going to be very loud with only 185 watts each.
the gain is a lot less than I used to have it. The gain is almost half. and the bass boost is just a quarter up. but loudness on the head unit is off, bass is at 0 on the headunit.
