I'm in Vegas on my netbook and the hotel has wireless internet but when I try to access it a message says your credit card will be charged,how the fucc can they tell it's me?it is unsecured

every hotel ive been in, even ones that offered free internet, you had to call down to the front desk and get a password and username.

maybe theres an access point or something in your room so they know when its being used? just a wild guess, i really have no idea.

I can think of one way this could work. Your room, and every room has it's own wifi system, not a common wifi system for a bunch of rooms. The antenna picks up only your computer, or any computer in your room, but not your neighbors. With this system they would know when your using the wifi, and charge your room accordingly.

If you had an external wifi card and directional high gain antenna you could try to hit another rooms wifi and steal thier wifi.

Although there may be a layer of sheilding between rooms to allow the wifi seperation.

Close. To my knowledge of how this works they have routers on each floor. They can control the broadness of the range that is sent out. They can tell by your wireless signal your general location I know that is possible.

I didnt think that they could be that specific as to location though.

Unless it was a really upscale hotel they wouldnt have a router for every room i dont think. There could be a sensor of sorts in the room?

I will ask this guy I know who tests peoples servers security as a living. Hacker turned legit.

I guess your method would be easier. Simple direction finding with XY or XYZ antenna arrays could pinpoint the location within a few inches at that range. I was thinking wifi systems have become very cheap and it wouldn't cost much to rig each room with it's own wifi. I know most of the new hotels have windows that contain a layer of metal flake that act as EMF shielding. It wouldn't be hard to shield the rooms from each other.

Your way still sounds cheaper.

looks like cox cable set up the system and the further you advance they ask you to agree to their terms and I'm sure the last step of the process is to ask for your credit card info or you won't be able to advance any further.I'm picking up a signal from 4 hotels and each has cox in the name

You're trying to access THEIR network they have software to allow people to use the wireless once they agree to pay for it..
