how big a cap?

Capacitors give out generally low amounts of power when necessary. I did the math last night in another thread (I don't remember which one.) One farad ends up being 144 watts @ 12 volts and I believe 164 @ 14 volts.

Which, isn't bad... but for the money, you can buy a battery which has hundred thousand + farads, granted at a lower discharge rate, it will be sufficient enough for nearly any current draw from an amp. Capacitors are regularly used in things like flashes for cameras, and other things that need a burst of energy in a millisecond.

Cliffs:

Caps aren't as good as an extra battery.

(NOTE: Don't get an acid-based battery to put in your trunk / cab... get a closed cell battery.)

save you money and get an extra battery or batcap

Let's speak in terms of numbers...
To hold an average AA battery in a capacitor, you'd need roughly 10,080 farads.

Need I explain more?
I found this on a previous cap discussion...
