Horns vs. Tweets?

Why on earth would you need two tweets per tower anyway?
Depends really on what your doing.
Mainly trying to get loud, they will end up being in the living room of the college house //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif but would like some SQ there too for movies.

If your goal is loud. Horns are the way to go.

If you have the room, a full horn setup would be in order.

The question is, how loud, and how much space are you willing to sacrifice?

A pair of Decware full size Imperial Horns would be amazing I imagine.

um. he is not talking about horn enclosures. he is talking about horn loaded compression drivers.

and OP - you are taking this way too far. horns are more efficent and require less power to get loud. thats all. tweeters and a midrange in a center\left\right on a 5.1 reciever with 100w to each bookshelf will get loud as hell. add a dedicated 15 in a low tuned ported enclosure with 200~500w and you will be happy.

there is no need for two tweeters in a room per enclosure. thats just downright outrageous. the 5.1 will work great with movies and it will sound great with music (id turn it to stereo, but at a party who pays attention to the stereo imaging.)

I realize this, but if he wants a true party system, normal speakers must be thrown out the window. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

It will also help out if you post what you are thinking about building so that we can give a more specific tweeter that will suit your needs.

Also depends on how well the horn is designed and what music he listens too, keep in mind that BLH's especially usually have a nice dip right in the midbass region...

Horns vs Tweeters... Humph...

Well, the big thing that differs is the sound of them, efficiency , and space.

But, honestly if you want a really good party system a MTM system with Dayton RS drivers would be awesome. Adding more than one tweeter causes more problems than it has benefits. You would be surprised the SPL you can get out of a decent quality tweeter.

I guess to honestly recommend a system we would need to know your knowledge level, budget, space, and requirements other than "loud", because it is easy to get loud. It is harder to get loud and sound good doing it.

well designed horn > *

have heard a few, maybe not good i dunno. I have always like soft dome tweeters over pretty much anything.
I have to say Diamond Tweeter > *... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

But if I had to categorize by my personal taste...

Diamond Tweeter > Alloy/Fabric >= Horn ~ Planar

I have really come to like the Alloy tweeters in my 703 and DM601 S3. But a lot of alloy tweeters can be harsh.

Make a high end speaker for cheap [as compared to store speaker costs].

Dayton MTM is good, but which one? Roman compiled the data for you

as you can choose one of six possible crossovers for the project.

Now that you have a high end MTM, to make this into a party speaker

just make a seperate box for some 12" - 15" woofers that add more bass and

midbass and place the MTM box on top of this 'special' woofer box. For non-party

applications, don't use the woofer box and enjoy the relaxed sound of the MTM's.

Here's an example of what I mean.

MTM on top of the woofer box, both seperate units.

The Dayton RS tweeter seems to be on sale, $42 each.
