Hooking a hard drive up to your audio system?

For ease of access, I've been considering ripping my 600+ CD collection to a hard drive. The heck with compression and Ipods.....why not just rip lossless to a big hard drive? If my math is correct, a 500GB hard drive should be more than enough and allow for growth of my collection. Some questions about doing this:

-Are there head units available that will interface with a (non-Ipod) hard drive?

-Can music (if ripped properly) stored on a hard drive sound as good as an original CD?

-Are any of you running a setup like that? If so, where are you placing the hard drive in your vehicle?

What would be really cool is to buy two hard drives and have one in my vehicle and one hooked up to my home theater system. That would give ease of access to music in both places, and provide a backup of the music as well.

Thoughts, ideas, links?

Thanks!

I have over 150GB COMPRESSED(120GB or more ripped straight from CDs I have, the rest purchased as MP3s from alltunes) in 192 bitrate MP3s. He is looking to store uncompressed, unmolested audio files. If his collection is as vast as mine, he will need 500GB for futureproofing. Some people listen and archive more than just the newest top20.

I have the Pioneer 6900UB. It has a USB wire capable of thumb drives and hard drives up to 250 GB. RIght now I have a 8GB thumb drive and its about maxxed out at 2300 songs.

You can get the Pioneer 6900UB for $240 and a 60gb usb drive on ebay for $60.

Get an omnifi. It comes with a 20gb hard drive, but it can be upgraded.

My car automatically connects to my home pc through the wireless connection every week at a certain time and updates the songs in my car.

No need to carry hard drives around
