SHILOH BOY
About two weeks ago I installed a Tsunami 4-channel in my truck. It was running some pioneer 6x9's(temp) and some Seas. Everything sounded pretty darn good. Then I went out to the store and then this weird sound started coming through the speakers. Sounded like a screeching sound with some thumping mixed in. It started getting worst so I turned the radio off and there was a smell of burning wires. I got out and checked the amp and it was in protect.
I disconnected the amp when I got home and re-did my ground. Had a spare amp and so I connected it and it played fine. Hooked the Tsunami up and it was good for 2 seconds and went back in protect. Jumped to power for 2 seconds and then it stayed in protect. It did that everytime I turned the radio off then back on.
I thought it could have been the speakers wired to low so I connected it without the speakers and the same thing happened. Now the spare amp has been in there for 2 weeks and not one problem.
However I when I first hooked the amp up, I notice the same thumping noise that started just before things went crazy with my Tsunami. So I grounded the RCAs to the radio and the problem was gone.
I noticed on the factory radio that it was 2-ohms but the factory speakers were 4-ohms. I have the speaker wire running directly to the factory speaker wires behind the dash. The amp was bridged and I changed the setting from 4-channel to 2-channel on the amp. It should have been able to handle the 2-ohm load right?
Also the tweeters went out too.
Question: Could the H/U have fried my amp due to ground loop?
Is it time for a new amp?
