i thought i heard it the other day, so i said something to my dad, and he told me to put poison up in the ceiling. But i was too lazy, so i just wrote it off as "oh houses just make noises sometimes"

attach a piece of cheese or something on to a hella big fishing hook with like 30 ft of line and go upstairs and hold the string until you feel the rat bite then pull the string and catch the rat!
