William Shakespeare: Part 1
William Shakespeare is and has always been since the 19th century widely considered being the greatest writer in the English language.
Origins of the Poet/Playwright
William was the son of John Shakespeare, a successful glove maker and alderman from Snitterfield, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy landowning farmer. He was born in Stratford upon Avon, a market town civil parish in south Warwickshire and was baptized on April 26, 1564. This is the first official record that Shakespeare exists, as birth certificates were not issued during Queen Elizabeth's time. His date of birth is unknown but has been traditionally observed to be on April 23, St George's Day, since baptisms were normally performed after a few days of birth. He was the third child of the eight children his parents had
Although no attendance records for the period survived, most biographers agree that Shakespeare was educated at the King Edward’s Grammar School in Stratford, a free school chartered in 1553, about a quarter of a mile from his Williams home. Grammar school curriculum was dictated by law throughout England, therefore the school would have provided a strong, intensive education in Latin grammar and literature. The students would likely have been exposed to Latin plays, in which students performed to better understand the language. This school, which made frequent use of corporal punishment, was free to male children in Stratford dating from an endowment by a Catholic chaplain in 1482. There is no evidence that his formal education extended beyond grammar school.
After attending the school, at the young age of 18, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, who was 26, on November 29, 1582 at Temple Grafton, which is near Stratford. Two neighbors of Hathaway posted bond that there were no obstructions or obstacles to the marriage. There appears to have been some over eagerness and rapidity in arranging the ceremony, due to the fact that Anne Hathaway was three months pregnant. Six months after the marriage, Shakespeare got a baby girl, who they named Susanna and she was baptized on 26 May 1583. Then, Anne gave birth to twins, one son, Hamnet and one daughter, Judith and they were baptized on February 2, 1585.
After marrying Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare left few traces in the historical record until he appeared on the London theatrical scene acting and writing plays. The time period from 1585 until 1592 is known as Shakespeare's "lost years" because no evidence has been found to show exactly where he was or why he left Stratford for London. But there have been a number of stories saying where he was and why he left, including that Shakespeare got in trouble for poaching deer, so he left Stratford. What’s bad is that there is no direct evidence to support any of these stories and all of them started after Shakespeare's death.
