Hifonics, horribly overrated?

The X991 actually starts clipping at 25 on the volume knob (at least mine does...used a 0db 50hz test tone and was using an oscope to see when the wave started to become square...with the sub at +15 and everything else at zero).
How are you running the SAX-100.2? You running it 100x2@4ohm? If so than 28.3 is way to high (100*4=400 sq. rt. = 20)...unless it's too early in the morning for my math skills?

As far as getting another amp...I'm sure you're happy with the Sundown so just get another one (SAZ-1500D for a little extra power if you need it in the future).
I was actually adding the total wattage from both channels and used that in the equation. The sensitivity knob is at 1/2 and the tweeters attenuate at the crossovers at full volume on almost every song but theres no distortion from the midbass on most songs.

With the sensitivity knob at 1/2, the DMM reads ACV's: 27.9volts. So if my math is correct, at 1/4 of the way the we're looking at around 14ish volts so I set the knob to about 1/3 of the way to achieve around 20volts.

the xx series of hifonics as far as my personal experience went were always underrated a good amount.

used xx colossus, zues, and herc and was very happy with each.

wish i could find an xx olympus

Are you measuring current?

Just the voltage wont tell you anything.

And a speaker will have a reactive load so it is useless to figure power based on an impedance rating of a sub.

And at what DC voltage drop on the amp?

The Hifonics amp will put out more than rated wattage as long as DC voltage doesnt drop too low.

Thats a good point, any other ipod users that could care to elaborate a bit more on this point?
If you are using a g4 or g5/5.5 ipod with the dock connector (line out) with the EQ off then I wouldn't imagine you would be clipping with the ipod unless the files your playing are poorly encoded.

Those ipod's have good DAC on them and the line out is fairly clean. red wine audio modded ipod's are even better.

I have never had any clipping or distortion with the ipod as the cause in my car (Using Alpine CDA-9887 HU). I have done comparison after comparison of actual CD's in the HU and then there ripped lame -v2 preset encoded mp3 files on the ipod and I can not tell a difference between the two.

That said... if you are using the headphone ******** the ipod for a direct AUX connection of some sorts then I would tell you to throw your ipod out the window and get a test tone CD...
