hifonics and alpine

After reading over plenty of threads, it seems that hifonics is overrated. I am not sure how much the are overrated...200 watts? 300 watts? It is going to be wired at 2 ohms. The website says its 900 watts rms but is there anyone who could give a more accurate estimation of what it will really be (since its overrated)?

The other amp I was looking at was the alpine m605. I have not head many things about this amp. And I currently own a m350 with its gains almost at the max. (I know its terrible for the amp and sub, but all I'm saying is that alpine amps are durable.) I have had no problems with it yet.

Comparing that the 1206d might put out around 750 rms at 2ohm (maybe?) and the m605 would probably put near 650 rms at 2ohm, my best guess is to go with the alpine since 100 watts is not that noticable. Ideally I would like to get around 800/900 watts and stay with a somewhat reputable brand. It is just not gonna happen for around $250/300.

Im going to be powering a 1242 type-r. Not worried about overpowering it. The only thing I am a little worried about is my standard electrical system. Which amp would beat up my electrical less?

THanks.

Just from personal experience with both these brands, I would honestly go with the Hifonics. You say your Alpine is durable, but almost every Alpine amp I've ever used seemed to be lacking sufficiently in the power delievery department.

I don't know what either of these amps true power are, but I would personally go with the Hifonics. Just my .02

Alot of your different experiences are probably based on the different power supplies that the different brands have, the alpine is probably an unregulated power supply, which will try and take every drop of power it can get and turn it into wattage, while the hifonics probably uses a regulated, and just does whatever it can with the power it's provided, even when underpowered, the wattage will obviously decrease, but the sound quality wont be affected, where some amps don't sound good if they don't get enough juice.

That's also why some people have light dimming problems, while some people can put "8000000000 watt" amps in their car, with the 90A factory alternator and not have dimming, is because their amp uses a regulated power supply, it will prevent the amp from overdrawing the power supply, and just use what's available.

My bxi2006d, for example, isn't getting nearly enough juice from my car's factory 120A alternator, and still i don't have dimming lights, and as long as i set the gains correctly, low enough where the waves still look like waves, rather than squiggly lines from underpowering on my o-scope, the sound quality is still great.

*edit- before someone corrects me all bent out of shape, i may have mixed up the two power supplies, the regulated power supply might be the one that tries to make rated power no matter what, and causes dimming, it's late!!

Thank you Heyman421. So the hifonics one is not regulated and will generally have better SQ based on the fact that it only uses what is available? I am not sure if I have that right or not.

THanks

I guess it's more accurate to say that the hifonics will always make a power output that's directly proportional to the input voltage, where a regulated amplifier, will try and draw more amps from the electrical system if there's a voltage drop.

Basically, a regulated power-supply havin' amplifier will try and make rated power no matter what the input voltage is, which is what sucks your electrical system dry. An unregulated doesn't worry about whether or not it's making rated power, if you can dig that. So yes, an amplifier with an unregulated power supply will sound better than one with a regulated power supply if your electrical system can't fully power it, and i'll bet a good 60% of people with systems have insufficient electrical systems for their gear, and i'm one of them, unfortunately //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif.
