Here we go again; Tweeter recommendations

So, I've decided to come back after about a 3-4 year absence. Took a look at all my CA stuff, and asked myself "why did I even buy that?". Young and naive.

So, currently I have a pair of the XBL^2 RE XXX 6.5" MIDS that I will be running (at least that I want to run) and I had bought a pair of Usher 9950-20 tweeters from PE a long time ago. Now, I need recommendations on new tweeters seeing as how those were made for Home Audio and are effing huge.

The xxx mids require a fairly big enclosure themselves, so I need a way smaller tweeter to pair with.

I will be using (read: attempting my own) kickpanels to mount these. I'm pretty sure I would prefer soft/silk dome tweeters as I don't like harshness.

Budget no more than say $150-$200 for a PAIR including tax and shipping, unless they are very well worth the extra money.

I am somewhat redoing my system as of current. Planning as follows:

Sub stage: 15" XXX (not sure on size of box or sealed/ported yet) running off either an earthquake PHD3 or an IA 20.1 (Temp use I will run my 13w7 then most likely sell it off)

Kicker KX300.2 to run the mids off of

Was wanting to run the tweeters off my USamps HCA-25 but I have no clue on the power ratings or load range.

Front stage will be running active off my Pioneer 880prs headunit.

If you guys want/need more information feel free to ask me.

Thanks for any advice/tips/help/suggestions/etc.

If you have the room I have a pair of fountek fr89-ex that would fit the bill perfectly. They are able to run from 250 hz on up. They are a 3 inch fullrange that sound great. Since the xxx mids dont like to play very high these or a similar driver would be a perfect solution for you.

Getting these and highpassing them around 1.5khz @ 24db/octave would work in place of a tweeter?

Only problem is the xxx mids need ~0.3 cubic foot enclosure (RE recommended) so they take up a lot of room as is. Unless somehow I placed them close together in the baffle of the kick pod.

I do realize it's going to be hard to find a regular tweeter that will play as low as 1.5khz-2khz (highest XXXs like is 1.5khz which I forgot to mention).

I do realize 3-way would be easier but they will not fit in my doors (2-2.5" mounting depth).

How does a fullrange driver compare to a tweeter in general?

thanks for all the help and suggestions so far. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

These would work well for that. I preferred the sound of these and my dayton 8's over a lot of the normal 2-way setups I've used. They are actually smaller than youd imagine. They are pretty easy to fit on your dash, which helps bring your soundstage up a lot since they play a broader frequency range than a standard tweeter.

Do you happen to know the actual dimensions of the driver? My usher 9950s are 1" large format tweeters but span about 4-5 inches across.

Your PM box is full so I'll respond here:

These can easily go down to 2000. I had them in my kicks in my bimmer. I only had them crossed down to 3500 because I ran L4's with them. I was running them off my GT 5750 so they were getting around 75w each. They were amazing and i hate to sell them but we are moving to Italy in a couple months and the car they were in is getting sold before we move.

Inbox cleared. Sorry about that.

I've heard great things about HAT L1 PROs, and I have no doubt they are amazing. Only thing is, they don't seem to be able to crossover as low as I need them to. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Those RE XXX mids do have a bad breakup before 1.5khz.

If you where to cross the XXX around 200-250 lowpass or bandpass, then you could use them as midbass only & a fullrange will cover everything up.

Those Founteks are pretty small

I had a pair crossed over at 200hz highpassed.

yes they sound great without a tweeter.

or if you have the room you can get a pair of Markaudio widebanders CHR 3 when madisound gets them in stock

I'm using A pair of chr-2 which i love, but i'm about to move up to the chr-3 when they get in stock

If you were to use a full range like the fountek I would recommend crossing way lower than 1500 just because your sound stage raises incredibly by using a driver that will play so low up on your dash area. A lot of people run them tweeterless, but I found that using a small tweeter crossed at 10k or so really helps out with the top end as the founteks have a peak around 15k iirc. Fortunately I have an audiocontrol 2xs with a chip to cross at 10,600 hz lol. If you are interested in using a driver like this pm me and I'll work out a good price with you.
