Helping a buddy with ported boxes and we're having problems!

Hey guys,

I'm helping a buddy out with his system and we decided to build boxes... something I'd never done before. So I built the two ported boxes for his 12" Kicker CVRs to Kicker's minimum specs in the manual but it wasn't too detailed on the port dimensions... Long story short, they sound like crap. No depth, not really even hitting worth ANYTHING. I'm thinking the problem lies in the depth of the port if that makes sense... I've attached some pics (please excuse the Blackberry...).

Now the big question... do we just scrap em and start over or modify the port depth or would that even fix the problem? Any help is hugely appreciated!

Scrap and start over. The box looks way too small and looks like it's ported very high, which is why you're not getting hardly any sound out of it, probably most of what it's trying to play is below the tuning frequency, since it looks like you're tuned above 60hz, easily.

A proper box for one of those is going to have to be nearly three times the size of that one.

mdf contains formaldehyde, I wouldn't burn it

Ram is right... That enclosure is WAY too small... ( Seal the port - then you have a good sealed enclosure for it... )

... LOL!

And at MDF burning... You'll be sitting there watching for a VERY long time. ( with about 40 attempts - cuz it's gonna die out. )

.... Look back at the recommendations on the Kicker site. It states ( + Port ). That means - whatever the cuft is: 1.5 - 2.5cuft + The Port...

... MEANING: You have to keep the subwoofer chamber @ 1.5cuft - 2.5cuft... even after you add the port & the sub.

Like everyone else said box is WAY too small and port is WAY to short. If you need some help there are free box plans pinned to the top of this forum, oh and don't worry they are pretty idiot proof.

Regardless of the failed calculations that's one of the best noob boxes I've seen on here. There's definitely been waaayyyyy worse.
