I've been reading the forums for a few weeks. I have mostly cheep entry level equipment, a little entry level knowledge, some electronics experience and a BOATLOAD OF QUESTIONS.

In all of my hobbies I like to experiment. I try to think outside the box a bit. I see no reason that this hobby will be any different, so keep in mind that some of my questions will be very "beginner" and some will be a bit strange as I try to learn and understand the finer details of car audio, and how those details pertain to my system and my cheesy experiments.

Thump on

D

Thanks audiobaun,

You are way ahead of me. I had a crappy system that I crappily self installed when I turned 16. That was 33 years ago. I have not been around many real systems in my life so I am basically starting from scratch.

My biggest hurdle is lack of experience. I understand the math behind most of this stuff, but I do not know how it relates to the way my ears perceive the sound.Example. tuning a box. I can see on WINISDthat I have a +6dB hump at a certain frequency. I understand how to manipulate the parameters to change the frequencies of the hump. I can even reduce the hump. But I do not know how much louder +6dBs actually is. May be I want that hump at 30dBs. Maybe at 50dBs. May be not at all. I have no idea how much change is made to my ears when I nudge a parameter here or there. I feel like I am trying to learn to ride a bike by reading about it.

Here's a good webpage on dBs vs power and Watts and loudness:

John Kuthe...

Thanks Mr Kuthe. What I really need is to hear some good systems live and in person. I understand the relation between dbs Power watts and loudness, but honestly, if you started playing a track, and slowly turned it up, I would have no idea what "doubling "of loudness really means. I can tell it gets louder, and I know why. I just do not have any idea what doubling actually sounds like. I can not tell 30%louder from 80% louder from doubling. It is either a little louder, a lot louder, or a shitload louder. AND... It doesn't seem linear to my eardrums. 10 dBs seems to make smaller changes at lower volumes an larger changes at high volumes. I can say" I want my subwoofer to be 15% louder". i do the math, change my gain, and then I find out 15% louder isn't near what I wanted... or WAY more than I wanted. What the heck is "doubling of loudness"?

(putting this into words is much harder than I expected)

It is sort of like .......I know all about the color orange. I have been told that you can mix red and yellow to get orange. It is the color of a fruit by the same name. I have read every book and webpage about the color orange, But I am blind, and have never seen the color orange so I have not idea what orange actually looks like. (yeah I know reading books and webpages would be hard if I was actually blind //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

edit: I hope that didn't offend any blind people.

Ya.. I believe that you should go to some audio shows and sit in some vehicles and get some demos. That may answer some of your questioning as well as experiencing. That may help you a bit rather than hear say
